If your fridge or freezer is too cold and another fridge is too hot, it may seem like a mystery. We have done detective work to fix the problem and the most common causes are an overfilled fridge and a faulty de-icing system.
If you’re wondering your fridge isn’t as cold as the freezer, your fridge might be overloaded. Too much food is another reason why the fridge is too hot and the freezer too cold. Many refrigerators and freezers that are too cold or refrigerators that are far too hot are common parts that do not work and can cause problems.
It is standard that most refrigerators use fans to transport cold air from freezer to evaporator, where it is pushed into the refrigerator to keep cool. However, when a refrigerator is full of items that block the vents that allow the cold air to enter the interior of the refrigerator. When many items are in the freezer, they block the cold air that must flow into the refrigerator.
If the fan is not working properly, your freezer seems fine, but your fridge seems to be too warm. Your freezer starts to produce ice in the wrong places, e.g. At the vents of the evaporator coil, which means that the freezer is at the right temperature but the refrigerator is still warm. You want the area around your freezer to be below freezing, and you don’t want the temperature in your system to be above freezing.
If you suspect that your freezer is not cold enough, check the temperature settings. If you notice that your fridge feels too warm, but the freezer is too cold, your defrosting heater may be defective. Defrost heaters are normally switched off during the day to melt the frost accumulations on the evaporator coils.
Your defrosting thermostat detects the temperature of the evaporator coils. It switches off the defrost heater when the coils are cold and on again when they are defrosted. If the heating fails due to frost, do not let the air flow through the coils.
The evaporator fan is located in the freezer compartment and circulates cold air into the (too hot) refrigerator when the refrigerator is hot and the compressor running. To inspect the fan, you can either pull off the refrigerator or open the fan from the back of the compartment. Be sure to check the fan for excessive frost and check if the fan blade is damaged.
Each refrigerator has one or more evaporator fan motors, depending on the model and evaporator location. If you have a problem with your evaporator fans or motors, you can ventilate the evaporator coils in the freezer during the compressor’s operating time. If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the evaporator fan or engine may fail.
