How To Fix A Refrigerator That Freezes Everything

To keep your GE fridge from freezing due to lack of food, strive for 3/4 of it full all of the time. Aim to keep the fridge at least 3/4 full so that the cold air does not set in and items do not get frozen. When you notice that your fridge is freezing items at low settings, raise the temperature by one to two degrees within ideal range.

The temperature setting for the GE Refrigerator is considered to be 5 which is considered to be the norm both in refrigerator and freezer. To make sure you have a correct temperature, you must leave space to let air circulate properly between the freezer and the refrigerator compartments. When items are placed too close to a freezer refrigerators air vent, or duct, they may freeze due to proximity to the cold air.

If stored items are placed directly in front of vents at different locations, they may freeze due to constant cold air exposure. If you notice that food is freezing inside of your Whirlpool fridge, be sure that there are no stored items right in front of the vents. If your cooler is not full, as it usually is, then cold air will collect in the lower part of your cooler, potentially freezing food stored there.

If there are not enough refrigerated items soaking up the cold fridge air, then the fresh produce compartment at the top could get too cold, freezing food. If a properly-stocked cooler does not have much food inside, the cold air will drop down into the lower part of the cooler–so keep it filled, but not too filled, or food will likely not be properly cooled. You can try adding a little extra food inside your cooler, as a well-filled cooler does a better job at drawing in the cold air.

If the fridge is freezing food, try changing the temperature indicator, rearrange food, adjusting freezer temperature, checking the magnets, cleaning coils, replacing the thermostat, or checking the air vents. If you have adjusted your fridges temperature gauge and rearranged your food, but the problem still occurs, test your freezer temp. If the refrigerator has the temperature setting too low, the cooling system will operate for too long and begin leaving a frothy interior and freezing the food.

As a result, your mini-fridges internal temperature will plummet, causing things to begin freezing. If a seal has been damaged and is leaky, then your fridge will continuously cycle to compensate, and that is what is going to make everything inside begin to freeze. If the part of the gasket is leaking, it could result in the refrigerator running constantly, causing the entire stored food to become frozen.

You may be thinking that the leaky Door Gasket would result in the loss of cool air within your mini-fridge, which would lead to warmer interior temperatures. When refrigerator seals are not working properly, this could result in a freezer that is frozen as warm air gets inside. Essentially, bad seals can make the fridge constantly run, as the seals are allowing the refrigerator to operate like it is a wide-open fridge door.

If the coils are dirty and covered in dust, the refrigerator is working harder to maintain its frozen set temperature, and that leads to excessive cooling. If your fridges coils get dirty–covered in dust–then the fridge has to work harder to sustain the set freezing temperature. When your refrigerator coils are clogged, they cannot effectively expel heat, so your compressor has to work harder to maintain the cool enough temperature.

When this happens, the coils have to work harder to spread out heat, making your fridge interior cooler. If your condenser coils get dusty or dirty, your refrigerant that is flowing around might not be cooling enough, causing your condenser to have to work harder.

The fridge should be able to keep cool enough — assuming you keep the doors closed — until you are done cleaning your fridges coils. Allow at least one hour to go by before opening the door, so that you give the fridge enough time to cool back down.

If your Temperature Control Board is malfunctioning, it may be sending constant signals to your Compressor or Fan Motor, which will make your Refrigerator run too cold. If thermostat controls are malfunctioning, thermostats are not registering the internal temperature of the refrigerator accurately, nor are they sending an appropriate signal to the compressor.

Due to thermostat disputes, the temperature-controlling function of the thermostat may become lost, which would result in the product stored within the cooler being over-cooled. If the thermostat is defective, it may not shut down and keep running, which causes the refrigerator to over-freeze anything stored inside.

If your damper is malfunctioning, it may generate too much air flowing into your fridges compartment, leading to gradual decreases in temperature. This is essentially an assembly needed to regulate how much cold air flows from a fridge-freezer into a cooler.

Once it is placed in a mini-fridge and you shut the refrigerator door, the water vapor gets trapped within, drops in temperature, becomes ice crystals, and leads to the ice building up above your food and the walls. If the temperature inside the mini-fridge is just a bit higher than 32degF (0degC), then the moisture does not cause any freezing issues.

If you have a bottom-freezer model, and you notice the trouble spots are all around the base of the coolers compartment, the trouble spots are almost definitely caused by the air vents coming out from the freezer. If the food blocks a vent, this may stop the air reaching the rest of the unit, and exposure directly to a cold air source may cause your refrigerator to freeze food.
