For a refrigerator that isn’t cooling check a dirty condenser coil, pull out the refrigerator and open the rear access plate at the bottom of the refrigerator to inspect the coils. It is advisable to clean the condenser coils approximately every six months in order to smooth out the refrigerator operation. If the compressor overheats due to a dirty condenser coil, it should be switched off and cause a clicking noise from the back of the refrigerator for 2-3 minutes.
There are coils in the refrigerator that cool the condensed refrigerant. If too much dust or dirt accumulates on the coils, the heat is no longer released by itself and ends up in the refrigerator. Clean the dirt with a hand-held vacuum cleaner or a special fridge brush (see below) and the problem will be solved.
To check, open the refrigerator door and touch the back of the refrigerator with your hands, where the evaporator fan blows. The capacitor fan is located in a cabinet at the bottom of the refrigerator near the compressor capacitor coil (note that some refrigerator models have a coil on the back or bottom, not the fan). You will also want to check the air flow from the refrigerator to the freezer.
Most refrigerators create their freezer to keep the cold in the ventilation slots between the refrigerator and freezer area. If the vents are covered with wilted ice or food is stored on the side that prevents your refrigerators from circulating cold air, keep them from cooling the side of the refrigerator. Other reasons why your refrigerator does not cool are clogged vent openings or, in some cases, food boxes that prevent air from circulating through the refrigerator.
If your refrigerator compartment freezes its contents and the refrigerator control is set on the lowest setting, the problem is likely a faulty thermostat or refrigerator control. If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the temperature controller may be defective. The temperature control enables the flow of current from the compressor to the evaporator fan and condenser fan. If the condenser fans do not work properly, the temperature of the refrigerator increases and the compressor overheats.
Over time, a coolant-filled condenser coil can be glued to dust, hair and animal fur, reducing its ability to keep the air in the refrigerator cold. If dust collects on your condenser coils, they cannot regulate the internal temperature of the refrigerator. Dust, dirt, lint and other debris can accumulate on a series of coils on the ground until they lose their ability to produce cool air.
If your fridge or freezer is full, you may block the vents, preventing cold air from getting into the fresh compartments. If your freezer is functioning normally but your refrigerator is not cooling, this is a sign that there is a problem with the evaporator, fan or motor.
