If you see ice or frost accumulating in your freezer, you may have a problem with the drain pipe or drain system in your refrigerator. Excessive freezing (which looks like hard snow or clear ice) is caused by moist, warm air entering the device, as described in this article about ice in refrigerators and freezers. Ice formation in the freezer can be linked to a problem with drainage pipes, while frost formation is linked to defective de-icing systems.

The inside temperature of a freezer compartment should be below zero degrees, but when water enters, it floats down in the freezer compartment and it doesn’t take long for you to have a thick layer of ice. One of the problems with leaking water is that it can eventually lead to ice formation in the floor of the unit.

Instead of standing water on the freezer floor, you can divert water from your freezer to the drain. If too much wastewater accumulates in the freezer, it eventually freezes and covers the drain hole. If you want to access the drain, you will need a replacement de-icing sensor to ensure that the ice completely blocks the drain.

Pull your refrigerator out from the wall and place the replacement hose at the bottom of the service panel. The defrosting water pipe is plugged into the refrigerator and pressed against the wall of the refrigerator.

With a clear ice base, thawing the freezer is the easiest way to deal with it. The evaporator coils on the back of the freezer freeze to the point where air can no longer pass through them and into the freezer, and the fresh food compartment starts to warm up in the freezer which restricts airflow. Open the freezer and you can use a wet or dry vacuum or a bowl of hot water to melt the ice.

If you have a refrigerator with a water – ice dispenser, a water backlog can build up at the bottom of your freezer and cause enormous problems. Thawing pipes can become clogged with ice residues, which can cause water to build up and seep into the refrigerator.

When this happens, food particles and other waste can clog drain hoses, causing ice to form and water to leak from the freezer to the fridge. With any luck, your freezer will be in a drain position where melted ice flows into the drain hole. When the drain pipe is blocked, water is trapped in the freezer and forms a layer of ice.

Water and air freeze in the internal heat exchanger and form a thick layer of ice. An ice sheet in the freezer can cause a block in the defrosting channel. You can remove the freezer components, remove the panel and defrost the clogged drain by removing the freezer from the refrigerator with a simple removal and leave the door open 24 hours to defrost the drain.
