My Food Is Frozen But The Ice Maker Isn’t Making Ice?

If your fridges ice maker is not producing any more ice, or is producing smaller-than-normal cubes, the issue may be the water line to your ice maker is frozen. If you are finding that your ice maker is not producing ice at all, it may be because the water supply line is frozen — it could be for many reasons, but most commonly, it is because the ice has stuck inside.

If the line supplying water to your ice maker is frozen, it is a sign that either your entire system is too cold, or that your refrigerator itself is exposed to outside temperatures that are too cold, these situations will cause it to over-freeze. This over-cooling causes your freezer to drop to temperatures far below freezing, freezing the tips of the water pipe that supplies the water to the ice maker.

If a frozen water pipe is not freezing, the next step is to check your water filter or freezer temp. Use a small funnel and hot water to defrost the frozen inlet pipe, or unplug the pipe and defrost it in a sink. If your fill pipe is frozen, you might simply need to add a little extra water pressure to get water flowing.

If your water inlet valve has enough pressure and is receiving power, but your fridges ice maker is not filling up with water to produce ice, change your water inlet valve. Even when your fridge is set at a good temperature, your water intake pipe to your ice maker may get frozen, stopping the entire appliance before it even gets started.

If your refrigerators temperature is right, but the ice maker is not working, it is possible that your water inlet valve is faulty. If the thermostat is set too low, then the whole ice maker may suffer, freezing the water before it gets to the molds that create ice.

A low water flow will result in the ice maker being unable to remove the cubes from the evaporator plate — they will eventually accumulate and cause the ice to freeze. A low water flow means that the ice maker will not be able to release the cubes from the evaporator plate. If your water lines are blocked with mineral deposits or are too small, your water lines will not be able to provide a suitable flow of water to the ice machine.

If your water lines are plugged, the water cannot get out, and your ice does not get made. If you notice the flow of water is not strong, inspect the water line to see if there are kinks, brackets, that may be impacting flow, or blockages or damage. If you notice that the ability to ice the ice is reduced or broken in the refrigerator, check your water supply.

If you notice any accumulation of ice or ice-cold, you might want to look into your lines to see if there is a leak, or test that the defrost is working. A blockage, leak, or damage in your waterline can make my ice machine shut down automatically or otherwise stop working.

Another problem that you will want to look into is the possibility that your water filter is the reason why you are having issues making ice. To prevent any issues with ice production, always replace your water filter in the refrigerator at least twice per year. You might have to change your water filter, and if the freezer is really too cold, try turning up the temperature.

If your freezer is getting too hot, check that your condenser coils are clean, and that your condenser fan is working to keep your condenser and compressor cooling. The water filter might be clogged with sediment, particularly if you have hard water in the house.

Because the water has to pass through the filter, water cannot pass through it when it is filled with crud. Eventually, everything that is been filtered from the water coming from the tap, prior to being turned into ice, eventually gets trapped in your filter.

If a whole load of ice gets stuck, there is no way for any more ice to be formed. The waterline may also pose a problem, as there is no way to refill your sink.

If this is the case, take out the ice tray itself, wipe it down with a hand, and use hot water to get rid of any debris or ice. The warm water will melt any stuck bits of ice without adding any chemicals to your ice-maker tray — making it safer for you to start making ice again right back at your maker. Next, melt the ice by hand using something warm, such as a drying rack or a heat lamp, or pouring warm water over the top of it, then wait for all of the ice to melt.

Lift, then lower, a handle or cord; wait ten seconds to fill the tray with water. When the ice hits the low, pre-set temperature, the electrical heater at the bottom of the ice tray heats the ice a bit, releasing the cubes.

Some issues with ice makers may eventually cause larger (and more costly) problems with your fridge or freezer, so it is important to find a fix ASAP so you can get things working correctly.
