My Dishwasher Lights Are On But It Won’t Start?

When you press that “Start” button on the dishwasher, you expect it to light instantly and begin humming. When you press the Start/Reset button, after your GE dishwasher has already started the cycle — you see that the Start light flashes.

When start is happening, the controls on the GE dishwasher are not responsive, and a couple of buttons also begin to blink when you push on them. If the motor startup relay is not working, the rest of the dishwasher will not receive a “Go” signal from the control panel. If a door cannot shut correctly to trigger a switch, your dishwasher cannot be started.

If your selector switches or their connections to the control panel are damaged, you may have to take off the doors and replace them. If the readouts are incorrect, and your dishwasher is not turning on, the selector switches need replacing. To access the selector switch, you will have to remove the dishwashers doors, especially the interior door panels.

Your Starter Switch may not work, so that the dishwasher does not start, even though you had it set correctly and the latches closed. When the door is even a little bit open, or if it is not latching correctly, the dishwasher cannot start. Power issues, incorrect cycle settings, or the door failing to latch all prevent dishwashers from starting.

When the dishwasher stops midway through a washing cycle, and is not reset or restarted correctly,
it may become stuck in this cycle, unable to begin another. Or, if a delayed-start function has been selected by accident, this may stop the dishwasher from starting when you press the start button.

Models that feature the delayed-start hours button will let the dishwasher start right away; however, it will not start washing until a specified number of hours has passed. If your dishwasher is still not starting on command, then its electronics timer may be defective. If you notice your dishwasher is not dumping water correctly, or is not starting the way it is supposed to, then the timer, or its connection to an interior control panel, may have failed.

If your dishwasher is already connected, but it is still not working, it could have an electrical breaker problem. If you cannot get any electricity at all to the dishwasher, it could be an issue with one of your homes electrical components or breakers. If your dishwasher is not getting power anyway, then it is possible that a fuse has gone bad, user interface controls are malfunctioning, an electronic control board is failing, or wires are tripped that are keeping your dishwasher from getting power.

If the dishwasher does not turn on, but display lights are turning on and/or buttons are making sounds, that rules out that a power supply is the problem. The first step to fixing dishwashers that do not turn on is checking for the light switch. The light switch on your dishwasher cuts off the dishwashers power when you put the switch into its off position.

Whenever there is a flashing alarm and lights on your GE dishwasher, but no power is being sent, most likely, this is due to the door not closing completely.

Whenever you are starting up the cycle, or opening up your GE dishwasher mid-cycle, to add another plate — the dishwasher makes that bleep sound to remind you to properly close the door. Another time when a dishwasher will begin beeping (along with flashing lights) is if the system has experienced a power surge or an electrical fault. Whenever you hear the beep every 30 seconds to one minute, most of the time, the door is not latching properly, particularly when running.

If your dishwashers door is not closing correctly, or the latch switch on your door is broken, then the controls in your dishwasher might not be getting the electrical power needed to run your appliance properly. There are a few reasons your dishwasher might not start, but the most likely culprits include the door latch assembly, electric control timer, switch selection, and heat fuse. You will want to consult your owners manual to find manufacturer instructions on how to reset a dishwasher that has power but is not turning on.

If your Frigidaire dishwasher does not turn on, but has power, Electrolux (the maker of this brand) suggests checking that no racks are sticking out, and no dishes are blocking the doors.

Timers are really hard to test, so the best option is just to swap the timer and see if your Frigidaire dishwasher works — just be sure you tested all of the other components listed above first. The timer helps to make sure that your dishwasher starts, then runs the washing cycle properly, and when your timer becomes defective, it is possible that your dishwasher will not turn on.

Just be sure that your dishwashers control panel is disconnected from your home energy supply for around one minute. Shut off door — Push down the dishwashers door when you hit Start (the idea is to verify that the door switch is actually closed).

One major problem with the control board going bad is it may fail to send proper voltage to components that would activate the dishwasher. If the dishwasher is plugged in correctly, it may have the potential for the fuse to go off within the plug. If your Whirlpool dishwasher lights up, but does not begin, this may be a simple matter of a controlled locking, dishwasher being on sleep, the door not being fully closed, and a number of other issues.
