Why Is My Refrigerator Not Working But Freezer Works?

There could also be other reasons, such as a refrigerator that is not cooling, but a freezer that is working, but we focused on just the essential parts. One of the major reasons why fridge is not cooling but freezer works is because evaporator coils are not working properly. When your refrigerator is not cooling but freezer works, you want to fix the issue ASAP.

If the freezer is cold, but the refrigerator is hot, then there is a chance the parts cooling the fridge and freezer are working correctly. When your fridge is not cold, but your freezer is, it is likely the issue is related to one of the mechanisms in your fridge that is not working properly. If the freezer is cold, but your fridge is hot, and your evaporator coils are frozen, you might have a problem with your defrost system.

We can help you solve problems with a freezer that is cold when the fridge is hot, ranging from frozen evaporator coils to malfunctioning air handlers. Whether the issue is frosted evaporator coils or a bad thermistor, we will get to the bottom of it to get your refrigerator back up and running. We will eliminate the detective work from diagnosing a problem to a commonly occurring cause such as overfilled fridge or malfunctioning defrost system.

While it might sound weird, a fridge that feels hot when the freezer is still cold is a common issue. One of the major problems with refrigerators is when you discover the freezer is still cold, but other areas are hot.

Overcrowded fridge shelves may clog vents, which allows cold air to move from freezer to refrigerator. If your fridge is overfilled, items may block air vents that allow cool air into the refrigerators interior. When the refrigerator is full, items will obstruct the air vents that allow cold air to reach the refrigerators interior.

It is standard to find that most fridges use a fan to push the cold air in the freezer to an evaporator, which is then forced to enter the cooler region in order to maintain its cooling temperatures. If you are not feeling cool air flowing in your fridge (but know that the evaporator fan is working), the damper is probably jammed, or it is stuck in a closed position. If the fan is off, your freezer may still have cool air coming out of it due to refrigerant, but that is not going to be circulating in a larger cooler.

When a faulty fan motor for an evaporator breaks, it could make the fridge or freezer too hot. A malfunctioning evaporator fan motor slowly causes one side of the refrigerator to stop cooling because it is not circulated. When you notice that your Whirlpool fridge is not cooling, but the freezer is working just fine, a defective evaporator fan motor is the usual component failure.

If some part of your fridges defrost system fails, ice may begin accumulating on your evaporator coils, making it more difficult for your Whirlpool fridge to stay cold. While your refrigerators defrost system usually melts away a layer of ice, if it is not working properly, the ice will build up and clog the airflow inside of the evaporator coils. If your defrost heater is not turning on, the frost will accumulate on the coils, and ultimately air cannot flow through the coils to deliver cooling to the freezer or fridge.

To get your fridge temporarily working, take off the back of your freezer and clean off any built-up ice (pouring warm water on your vaporizer coils is best). If there is any built-up frost on any part of the system, the freezer should still function normally, but the fridge will be warmer. If your LG fridge is not getting cold, but the freezer is, try moving the timer dial to the defrost cycle.

If your coolers compartment is very frosty, disconnect your cooler and open your freezer door so that frost can melt. If you take off the lid inside your freezer and find that there is completely frozen ice in the coils, take everything out of your freezer and refrigerator, unplug the refrigerator, and let it thaw for 24-48 hours. If your defrost timer has jammed or is damaged, this becomes a perfect condition for a refrigerator that is not cooling, but the freezer is working.

When the fault occurs, temperature control panel can give proper temperature to freezer, but not to GE refrigerator. A malfunctioning board will cause your temperature probes to read incorrectly, meaning the fridge cannot properly cool. One of the most common problems occurs when a refrigerator from General Electric is working properly, but is failing to cool.

If a flap fails or becomes clogged, cooling air cannot get through correctly, and your GE fridge might not get enough cooling air. Even if everything else in your fridge is working correctly, if the door seal–also called adoor gasket–is defective, cold air inside the fridge can leak out. If those vents are blocked by too many items in your freezer, it could restrict airflow, which would go into your fridge. Freezer ice accumulation also blocks the vents, decreasing or stopping the cold air reaching the coolers compartment.

If your freezer starts building ice in the wrong places, like in a vent or the coils of an evaporator, it could mean that you have a freezer at the right temperature, but your fridge is too hot. Overcrowding, dirty condenser coils, and part failures can lead to a hotter refrigerator, but a cooler freezer. If your fridges defrost system is not working, the ice-cold condenser coils can freeze, leaving your Samsung refrigerator hot, but your freezer cold. If you hear the compressor running, but the fridge is not cooling, it is most likely that either frost-clogged evaporator coils or the evaporator fan is jammed or broken.
