My Freezer Compressor Is Always Running?

If your freezer keeps running, not shutting down when it is supposed to, it may be one of several problems that are causing this. When these go wrong, it is possible that your fridge gets too hot, causing the fridge to continue running in order to cool down. Your fridge will need to run nearly continuously to compensate for fans that no longer function.

If either one of those fans fails, then the fridge has to work continuously in order to keep a cool temperature. Heat causes the refrigerator to have to keep working continuously to keep things cool.
This would result in my refrigerator running, but failing to cool down to its preset temperature inside. If these are clogged, then your fridge is going to work harder, but it is not going to cool down to set temperatures. Check your thermostat; if it is not set at the correct temperature, my refrigerator is not going to get its work done.

If the thermostat is not doing the job of a thermostat, the ice particles are going to be building up on the coils, and that is going to make the refrigerator continuously run, because it is not getting a signal that the refrigerator is at the correct temperature. For defrost to function, the thermostat needs to feel that the coils are cool enough. So you should see that the defrost thermostat is attached to the copper tubing running from the coils to the freezer.

With power disconnected from your refrigerator, you should be able to reach behind the coils and spin the fan blades on your condenser fan. Remove the rear access panel on the fridge, and find the fan — it will be near the compressor. The purpose of a fan is to draw heat away from the condenser coils, and when a fan fails, your fridge does not cool enough, so it keeps running for longer than necessary.

If this defrost system fails, your condenser coils will stay frozen, and the fridge will keep running continuously, because the fridge cannot keep its compartments cooled. When the defrost termination thermostat that is malfunctioning becomes defective, it will not function properly, and the fridge will continue to run. Freezing prevents your evaporator coils from working effectively, so the fridge runs periodic defrost cycles to get rid of it.

When the defrost heater stops working, frost will build up rapidly on the refrigerators coils, leading to an always-on fridge. The development of ice will suppress your evaporator coils ability to maintain the fridges temperature, leading to your fridge running continuously, and not you.

This is usually located around condenser coils and this may prevent them from doing their jobs correctly, leading to your refrigerator running for longer than you need. When the condenser coils are dirty, they have to work harder than they normally would to get rid of the heat, and that could lead to the fridge staying lit up all the time in order to help cool down. To generate cool air, your refrigerator relies on the condenser fan, which draws air above the condenser coils.

In order to keep food cool, your refrigerator will work to keep the temperature stable by producing cold air. Maintaining your homes temperature lower during the winter months should mean that your fridge does not run quite as hard. Your fridge is still going to be trying to keep this temperature, but it is instead running constantly.

If your temperature-regulating PCB is bad, your refrigerator will just keep running and getting too cold. If you load your fridge full, like after just returning from shopping, for instance, you are indirectly forcing your appliance to heat up, meaning that it has to run continuously until the food is chilled. This is also a food safety issue, since a constantly running refrigerator is probably struggling to keep cool.

If your refrigerator is constantly running, it is most likely because it is struggling to keep things cold. Your refrigerator may even be struggling to keep things cool if you have the temperature too high. If the temperatures are set between 1o and 12oF, that will prevent even my fridge from cooling to an appropriate temperature.

Of course, the refrigerator is connected to power and gets electricity (it is running all the time), so in most cases, it is not a feasible solution. The gasket on your fridge door and freezer is another likely cause of the refrigerator not stopping running. When your refrigerator is constantly running your appliances defrost heater, it might have stopped doing its job melting the ice, which could be condensing in the wrong areas of your refrigerator, like your evaporator coils, causing it to constantly run.

If your defrost timer is not working, this could result in an over-cooling buildup, forcing your appliance to run longer periods of time in order to keep your temperatures at an appropriate level. If the heating element is faulty, the extra frost will build up, and the air will not be able to properly circulate around the fridge parts.

On some refrigerators equipped with frost-free technology, cold from the fridge comes from the freezer section. Some newer fridge models are free of ice, with condenser coils cooled by fans. The most common reason why a thermostat setting is not correct is because your refrigerator is running continuously, with a freezer setting too hot.
