Why Is My Dishwasher Not Starting?

Some of the more common problems with a dishwasher that does not get started are with door latches or door switches. Sometimes, the latch can fail, preventing the door from locking in place, which will keep the dishwasher from starting. Your starter switch might malfunction, so even though you have set it correctly and locked in the latch, the dishwasher does not start. If the door cannot latch correctly for the switch to be triggered, then the dishwasher cannot start.

If the door still does not close properly, there is a possibility that the latch is broken and cannot hold the door closed properly. If your dishwashers door does not close correctly, or the door latch switch is broken, the controls in the dishwasher might not get the electrical power needed to run the machine properly. If this is defective, your control panel will not supply the necessary electrical power for your dishwasher to begin, and it must be replaced by professionals.

If your electrical timer controls are defective, then the timer will not get the power needed to begin a cycle, potentially leaving the appliance unusable. If the display for your Maytag dishwasher is broken, you cannot use the timer feature in the control panel. If these functions are not working, and the dishwasher does not respond when the buttons are pressed, your control panel might be soaked or damaged.

If the Start button is pushed more than once, the dishwasher may return to a Drain cycle. When the start button is pushed twice, the start button resets the dishwasher to run the Drain Cycle, which lasts 90 seconds. When a dishwasher stops midway through a washing cycle, and does not reset or reboot correctly, it may become stuck in this cycle, unable to begin another. Once the power light stops flashing, your GE dishwasher has been reset and is capable of being restarted later.

If you push any buttons when a dishwashers controls are locked, the lock-on light will flash three times. If you notice any buttons are lit up or flashing, disconnecting the machine for one to two minutes, and then reconnecting can help reset your dishwasher.

If the dishwasher is already connected, but it is still not working, it could be an electrical circuit breaker problem. If your dishwasher does not turn on, but the indicator lights turn on and/or there is sound when you push a button, that rules out that a power supply is the problem. If you notice that your Electrolux dishwasher is not starting or is filling up, even though you have power, it could be an issue with your water supply.

If your dishwasher is not starting or filling, check that your water supply lines are connected correctly and that your water valve is turned on. Make sure your homes water supply valve is turned on and the dishwashers tub is connected to the water supply line correctly. Before starting, always make sure to disconnect your dishwasher and turn the appliances electrical power off. When the dishwasher does not dry enough, or does not begin at command, be sure to select the correct setting.

If your dishwasher does not still start on command, then perhaps its electronics timer is defective. If you notice your dishwasher is not dumping water correctly, or is not starting the way it is supposed to, then the timer, or its connection to an interior control panel, may have failed. If the motors starting relay is not working, the rest of your dishwasher is not getting a “Go” signal from the control panel.

If your selector switches, or their connections to the control panel, are damaged, you may have to take off your doors and replace them. To access selector switches, you will have to take apart your dishwashers doors, especially the interior door panels. Testing & Replacing The Start Switch Will Require You To Take The Door Apart. Another common reason why your dishwasher might not turn on is if the door is not completely closed.

A electrical problem could be to blame, keeping your dishwasher from turning on. Like with Maytag-brand dishwashers, opening a door or power failure often causes this problem with Whirlpool dishwashers. As a safety precaution, a Maytag dishwasher will not boot up unless the door is fully closed and locked.

You will need to consult your owners manual to find manufacturer instructions regarding the restart of a dishwasher that has power but is not turning on. If you have a different model, such as a Samsung dishwasher that does not turn on but has power, consult your owners manual for the reset codes. If your Fridaire dishwasher does not start but has power, Electrolux (the maker of that brand) suggests checking that no racks are sticking out, and no dishes are blocking the doors. Make sure that your dishwasher is connected to power and that the plug has not pulled out.

You might also want to inspect the electrical breaker box to make sure that the breakers controlling your dishwasher are working properly (also look for any frayed or damaged areas on the power cord). If a thermal fuse is not working, then the control panel is not receiving power, which is why the dishwasher is not starting. A blown thermal fuse may cut off the dishwashers power, and a malfunctioning timer may fail to activate appropriate functions at appropriate times.

When a motor failure occurs, not only does water stop running in the dishwasher, the dishwasher might even fail to run at all (depending on brand). If the drive motor fails, no significant water movement occurs, meaning there are no dishes being cleaned, and likely, the dishwasher does not even get started. If the latches are fine, and no soap accumulation is causing closing problems, then maybe the door shutoff sensor is out of order.
