My Freezer Has Stopped Powering Up?
If your freezer stops working and does not cool, the problem may be a problem in the starter capacitor. There are a few reasons why your chest freezer might have stopped working, like an automatic shutoff of the electrical controls, the freezer outlet being tripped, or your freezer simply taking a while to get going again. If your chest freezer is connected to the control panel, the power failure may have caused it to turn off. If the freezer does not power up again once power is restored, you will want to look at your circuit breaker to see if it went off during a power failure.
To turn the chest freezer back on after the power is off, push the reset button and hold down both up and down arrows at the same time while reconnecting the outlet cable. Make sure to connect the power cords together in one working power outlet in order for your fridge and freezer to turn back on. Then, plug your fridge back in, making sure that power cords are all fully connected. Remember, the power cord will likely sit behind the fridge and freezer.
Completely disconnect your fridge and freezer from power, removing the power cord from the wall. Pull the fridge from the wall, then test to see whether the plug is securely secured to the outlet. Check the socket where your refrigerator is connected to, (which is likely behind your fridge) to see if that is the power breaker, or you reset a tripped breaker, but still have no power.
Odds are some components in the refrigerator are drawing too much power, causing a circuit breaker to kick in to prevent overloading. As we mentioned, there are many reasons why your fridge may be losing power. Sometimes, several malfunctions may make your refrigerator stop working or become ineffective.
Power failures happen from time to time, but if this happens for just a brief period, there is no need to worry because your refrigerator will keep working just like before. While power outages are annoying, they are unavoidable, and will occasionally result in your chest freezer failing to function, even once the power returns.
If it is unlikely that your freezer can function again for the day, there are several things you can do. When a freezer really is not working, rule number one is to leave your freezer door closed. As a safety precaution with small children, make sure that the door is fixed, and cannot close.
When the freezer is not being used, keep the door of your freezer slightly open so that air circulates through the food compartment. For models that have a top freezer, adjust the top freezer door hinge using a nut driver, and the bottom freezer hinge using a socket wrench.
Make sure that your appliances controls are set to 0degF (18degC) for the freezer and 37degF (3degC) for the refrigerator. Other settings to check are whether the freezer is set to “off” or powered down. When freezer fans are running, that means that both the defrost timer and cold setting on your freezer are on COOL.
The temperature-control thermostat also has electrical contacts, which sends electrical energy to the compressor circuitry when the freezer needs to start cooling. The compressor startup relay is also known as a controller, and it works by feeding electricity to the compressor startup coils so your freezer can begin. You will need to open your fridge up to access this part, but once you do, you can change out the compressor start relay, but just remove the old one and insert a new one.
The supplied means that, if the starter relay is not working, the compressor at best is going to run intermittently — or, more likely, at all, meaning that your cooler is not going to get cold. If after auto-defrost mode, the compressor engine does not turn on, then you might need to replace the defrost timer. The inside contacts on the defrost timer can become damaged, which causes the defrost timer to stop when it is defrost, meaning that the compressor is not being signaled to defrost air inside the freezer.
Most of the time, the compressor fan should be operating as well, while the freezer fan is operating. If your freezer is getting hotter, not colder, the compressor fan might have stopped working, indicating it has broken. You can test whether your refrigerators fan evaporator is the problem by opening your freezers door, and then activating the door switch manually.
Check your appliances manual for the procedure for resetting the freezer to make sure the settings are not a problem. If you are seeing an error code, and are sure your refrigerator and freezer are working correctly, you can probably eliminate this code by resetting the fridge or freezer. If your fridge and freezer are able to get the temperatures you want without issue, you are done with the reset and you fixed any issues there were to begin with. If your fridge or freezer keeps ringing, then you can probably eliminate that beeping by resetting your appliances.
If you find the fridge is connected to the power outlet, the fridges circuit breaker has not been turned off, and the cooling controls are correctly installed, but the appliance is still showing no signs of life, keep the doors closed to keep cold air out, and call an appliance repair service. Make sure that the refrigerator is connected to a working outlet that is receiving power (plug a working light fixture or outlet circuit tester in). If your Frigidaire fridge fails to start suddenly, or after power is shut off, it may have an issue with the primary control board.
