If you notice that your refrigerator is hot but the freezer is very cold, the defrost heater may be faulty. If the freezer is cold but the refrigerator is hot and the evaporator coils are frozen, the problem may be in the defrost system. If any part of the refrigerator defrost system fails, ice can build up on the evaporator coils causing the refrigerator to work harder to keep cold.
If the refrigerator freezer is cold but the refrigerator is hot, the temperature control board may be faulty or not calibrated. The cold control is a temperature control switch that supplies power to the compressor and fan in the refrigerator. If the compressor and fan are operating normally, but the operating time or frequency is not sufficient to maintain the correct temperature in the freezer and fresh food compartment, the cold control may be faulty or not calibrated.
Electronic control boards are connected to temperature sensors that automatically monitor the health of the refrigerator and use this data to control the unit, compressor, fan motors and defrost system. Problems with the control boards can cause problems with these components causing the refrigerator to stay warm.
If your refrigerator is around 40 degrees or if it can reach at least 40 degrees, then your refrigerator is actually cooling enough; if you suspect the freezer is not cold enough, check the temperature settings.
If the defrost or anti-freeze function does not work, your refrigerator may become too hot. If the freezer starts to form ice in the wrong places, such as in the vents or on the evaporator coils, it could mean that the freezer is at the correct temperature but the refrigerator is too hot. If the refrigerator is not cold but the freezer is, the problem is likely that one of the mechanisms in your fridge is not working properly.
If the refrigerator is full, objects can block the ventilation holes through which cold air can enter the interior of the refrigerator. If too much food is in the freezer, this can block the flow of cold air to enter the refrigerator. However, if the vent is covered with ice or food stored on both sides, this can seriously affect the refrigerator’s ability to circulate cold air and keep it cool on the side of the refrigerator.
If the fan is defective the temperature in the freezer compartment will rise slowly and the temperature in the fresh section will rise faster, and the compressor will run longer and more frequently than usual, it should turn on when the compressor starts and you should hear the fan in the freezer compartment and feel the air moving there. To check the evaporator fan you must turn off the refrigerator and access the fan on the back of the freezer compartment.
If you have any accumulative frost that has accumulated anywhere in your system the freezer will still work fine, but the refrigerator will get hot. If you have a cold freezer and the refrigerator is still hot, you might need to call a qualified technician to take a closer look at it.
