My Dishwasher Has Stopped Draining?

The most common cause of dishwashers not draining is that food residue has blocked a filter or water pump. When food or sediment accumulates inside clogs in the filter, a dishwasher will not drain as well. If your trash disposal is clogged or if the drainage system is blocked, the dishwasher will not drain properly until you clear your drains or clean out the trash disposal.

If your dishwasher is not draining, one of the first things you should do is check the filters. If your dishwasher does not have a removable basket, then just wash your filter and take care of the areas surrounding your sink. To inspect your drain or pump for clogs, you should remove the filter to reveal the sink and pump located in the lower part of your dishwasher.

Over time, the dishwasher filter itself may get clogged with debris and prevent the drain from releasing water. If a portion of your dishwashers water is draining, but the drain is slow, leaving water at the bottom of the dishwasher, a clogged filter may be to blame.

Cleaning the dishwashers drainage pipes as well as other drainage pipes underneath the sink will clear clogs if they are the source of your draining problems. Rinse only the dishes to remove larger pieces of food which could potentially clog your dishwasher drain.

Since debris is a common problem that gets stuck in your drain, try cleaning it using a solution of equal parts baking soda and vinegar. If you have a garbage disposal, run it; this sometimes removes a back-up of debris from your drainage pipe, allowing the water to flow out of your dishwasher.

If a blockage is not located near the end connected to your dishwashers drain pump, either remove the hose where it attaches to your garbage disposal, or cap your garbage disposal with an airlock, to test for a blockage at this end. To check for a clog, you will have to remove the lower front panel and find the location of where the tubing line attaches to the dishwashers drain pump. Once you have checked and removed any clogs in your drain hose, you will have to reconnect it to your dishwasher.

Checking the other end of your hose likely requires you to get to the drain pump inside your dishwasher. If your dishwasher does not have an air gap, the hose leading from it can loop around the base of your counter, close to your sink. Under your kitchen sink, in the cabinets, your dishwashers drain hose will go in at the top of the air gap, so the bottom of the air gap empties down to a sink beneath your bin, or your garbage disposal, if you have one.

Water at the bottom of the dishwasher The result of the filter, the garbage disposal, the drain pipe, the drainage pump, or a blocked air gap. If your dishwasher was installed improperly, either with an elevated hose, an air gap, a control valve, or a combination thereof, you may find that sink water is coming back through into your dishwasher. Either issue can result in water sitting in the dishwasher, either because it is not being flushed out, or it is coming back in.

When that happens, the water cannot properly drain, which causes the back up in your dishwasher. When either one of these methods does not work correctly, it is possible that your dishwasher will no longer be draining correctly. A dishwasher that cannot drain is an issue that you are going to want to fix fast. If your dishwasher is still not draining, it could have a faulty solenoid that is causing the issue.

If the dishwasher is running, but the water starts to come out in the sink, your dishwasher could be clogged. If your house has more than one clogged drainage pipe, or if water is bubbling back up into the sink as the dishwasher is draining, you might have a bigger clog, and one that is not related to your dishwasher. If you notice that water is pooling at the bottom of your dishwasher or your sink, you might have a clog or partial clog in the sewer line of your kitchen.

Keep grease and oil out of the pipes, use high-quality dish soap that does not clog over time, and regularly empty the catch basin. If you are not running the trash disposal frequently, or do not regularly clean it, food and debris build up and stop the water from properly draining from the dishwasher. If your garbage disposal contains food that has not been ground down, or food sludge has settled into your drainage pipe beneath your garbage disposal, this could stop your dishwasher from draining correctly.

The dishwashers filter and drainage basket work together to capture food-related material in the washing cycle, keeping the contaminated water from returning to your dishes when you wash them. Your dishwasher has a filter basket installed into the drain, which keeps debris from food and other items from getting into the pipes. Depending on the model, your GE dishwasher might have a removable filter. The type of filter you have will vary depending on your dishwashers age and model, so be sure to consult the manual for instructions on removing and cleaning your filter.

Running your garbage disposal prior to starting a washing cycle can clean out the drain, which is a common source of debris that can clog the flow of water. Occasionally, a drainage pipe may become clogged with food scraps, or bends or buckles in a drainage pipe may inhibit water flow. If the hose is not kinked, it may still be clogged with food slime or trash. A kinked sewage line, the light, plastic, bent pipe that runs from your dishwashers drainage pump to your garbage disposal (or airlock) can stop the water from flowing out.

Next, use a cup to get rid of excess water in the interior of your dishwasher, and then use towels to absorb any remaining water so the drain is reachable.
