My Freezer Is Always Running?

A refrigerator cannot chill without a properly functioning compressor. If you can hear the compressor motor running, but the freezer is not cooling at all, there may be an issue with your evaporator or condenser coils.

On most fridges, the fan motor for the evaporator does not spin while the doors are open. If the door switch is turned on, but still does not start the evaporator fan motor, then the evaporator fan motor needs to be replaced. To test for an evaporator fan motor, your freezer maintenance specialist will open the units doors and manipulate the door switches. Check to see if the evaporator fan is jammed up with ice, if it is, defrost your freezer.

Remove the rear access panel from your cooler, and find the fan — it will be near the compressor. The purpose of a fan is to draw heat away from the condenser coils, and when a fan fails, your fridge does not cool enough, so it keeps running for longer than necessary. If either one of these fans fails, then your fridge has to work continuously in order to keep the temperature down.

If these are clogged, then your fridge is going to work harder, but it is not going to cool down to set temperatures.

Check your thermostat; if it is not set at the correct temperature, my refrigerator is not going to get its work done. If the thermostat is not doing the job of a thermostat, the ice particles are going to be building up on the coils, and that is going to make the refrigerator continuously run, because it is not getting a signal that the refrigerator is at the correct temperature. The most common reason why a thermostat is set wrong is the freezer temperature is set too high.

Being hotter than this will make your fridge constantly run in an effort to constantly keep cool. Developments will suppress the ability of your refrigerators Evaporator Coil to keep the cold air inside, which will result in the fridge running continuously, and not being you. When the condenser coils become dirty, they have to work harder than usual to get rid of heat, which may result in your refrigerator running continuously in order to help keep it cold.

This happens frequently around condenser coils, and it can prevent them from doing their jobs correctly, leading to your fridge running for longer than it should. Frost stops evaporator coils from working effectively, which is why the fridge runs periodic defrost cycles to get rid of it. When the defrost heater stops working, frost will build up rapidly on the refrigerators coils, leading to an always-on fridge.

When your fridge is constantly running your appliances defrost heater, it might stop doing its job melting the ice, which could condense in the wrong areas of your refrigerator, like your evaporator coils, leading to a freezer that runs constantly. If this is not working properly, whether the defrost itself, a timer, a control board, or the thermostat, this could leave your defrost running constantly. If your Temperature Control Thermostat is malfunctioning, your Temperature Control Thermostat could be the reason why your Freezer is running all the time. When the thermostat for malfunctioning defrost shutdown is faulty, it does not function correctly, causing the refrigerator to continue running.

If this defrost system is faulty, your condenser coils will stay frozen, and the fridge will keep running continuously, because the fridge cannot defrost its interior. If the PCB regulating the temperature is faulty, then the fridge will run continuously, getting too cold. There could even be a leak, forcing the appliance to continue running non-stop.

If your air-damper is malfunctioning and no longer opens (due to frost accumulation, for instance), the appliance might continue running longer than normal. If you load up the freezer completely, like after you just got back from shopping, for instance, you are indirectly forcing your appliance to heat up, meaning that it has to keep running continuously until your food is chilled. If your room temperature is too hot, it might require your refrigerator to operate for longer periods.

Your refrigerator also might have trouble keeping things cold if you have the temperature too high. When these go bad, your fridge may get too hot, causing the fridge to constantly work to bring down the temperature. A common cause of the condenser fan constantly running inside the fridge is a thermostat. The condenser fan inside the refrigerator is the engine, just like in your car, it needs a steady stream of air in order to stay cool enough to keep working parts functioning.

Putting hot or warm foods in the freezer lowers the temperature inside, thus forcing the condenser to spin up. Another reason your freezer is running, but is not freezing, is because of a defective fan in the evaporator. If you are packing the freezer too tightly, you can jam air vents, which can result in longer running times. If your defrost timer is not working, it may result in an accumulation of excessive ice, forcing the appliance to operate longer in order to keep temperatures in an appropriate range.

Of course, my fridge is connected to power and gets electricity (it is running all the time), so in most cases, it is not a feasible fix.
