My Refrigerator’s Freezer Isn’t Freezing Food?

The apparent purpose of your freezer is to keep things frozen, so the last thing you want is your freezer getting too hot. Using the freezer to chill warm items, or opening your freezer often, can impact the temperature inside. If your surroundings are too cold, your freezer might not have enough running time to keep the temperature.

That is why, even with a running compressor, your freezer is unable to maintain the freezing temperature necessary for food preservation. If you are hearing the compressor motor running, but your freezer is not cooling at all, there may be an issue with your evaporator coils or condenser. If you notice that your Samsung freezers temperature keeps rising, then it is possible that a problem is brewing with your compressor and condenser coils. Over time, dirt and dust build up on the condenser coils, which causes the coils to get too hot and have trouble keeping your freezers temperature at the ideal temperature.

If your refrigerator model has the Condenser Coils located on the back of the unit, this means that it is exposed to dirt. If your refrigerators condenser coils are dirty, then it is not going to work properly. If the coils of the evaporator are frozen, they cannot allow necessary air to flow through and that may cause the freezer not to freeze properly. If the rear part of your freezer, where your evaporator coils are located, is very heavily frozen, then you may run into trouble with the defrost.

A common cause for issues in Samsung refrigerators is the buildup of ice on the evaporator coil. Just as having too many items in your freezer blocks the vents, having too much ice buildup on your freezer vents and the evaporator coils prevents them from working correctly. A freezer cannot be cooled properly when the compressor is malfunctioning.

If your starter relay is not working, your fridges compressor might run intermittently, or at all, causing the freezer to run at a temperature that is too hot to freeze ice. What this means is that, if the start relay is defective, the compressor at best may operate occasionally — or, more likely, not at all, meaning that your freezer is not freezing. Basically, in order to test a start relay, you will need to disconnect the freezer from power and pull it away from the compressor. If the compressor is not running, the freezer cannot ice up your perishables.

Checking might seem basic, but a freezer packed to the gills could result in an airflow obstruction, especially if an evaporator fan is covered with tubs of ice cream or bags of vegetables. For instance, if a door is not closed tightly, humid air can get inside your freezer, freezing your coils. A bad door seal lets warm air in, leaking out cold air, which is just enough to keep your freezer from freezing. If your freezer door still does not seal properly after cleaning, you might need to replace your freezers seals or realign your freezer doors.

Placing a dollar bill at the lip of the freezer door seal may help you check to see if the cleaning helped. If you have cleaned, defrosted, and sealed your freezer, and everything seems to be working, try pulling the unit from the wall and vaccinating the coils using the crevice tool or brush attachment.

If using a freezer that is manually defrosted, inspect the interior for any buildup of ice. If you take off the lid on the freezer and see that the coils are fully filled with frost, take everything out of freezer and refrigerator, disconnect, and allow it to thaw for 24-48 hours. Frost that is only building on the back side of the freezer compartment, where the coils are located, indicates an issue in the defrost cycle.

The evaporator draws heat away from the freezer, cooling the contents, and turning cold refrigerant into hot vapor. A common freezer works by compressing, condensing, and vaporizing refrigerant gases in order to draw heat away from items being frozen.
